The System Director, Senior Counsel provides legal support in a wide range of areas in health care operations and business, with a focus on contracts that typically arise in connection with the operation of nonprofit healthcare systems. The Senior Counsel should also have significant experience with healthcare contracts, transactions and regulatory issues arising in connection with hospitals, physicians and other healthcare providers, nonprofit corporate governance. This attorney must have strong knowledge of health care laws and regulations, including those relating to: Stark, Anti-Kickback, and other Fraud and Abuse provisions.
This position requires the ability to work independently at a law firm senior associate/of counsel level, work at the direction of a more senior attorney in the Legal Services Department, and work collaboratively with all members of the Legal Services Department and with other CHRISTUS staff to achieve results. It also requires providing services in a consistently timely, professional and courteous manner in a diverse setting.
The Senior Counsel reports to the Vice President, Deputy General Counsel. The Senior Counsel may serve as an initial contact attorney for designated entities. The Senior Counsel should demonstrate initiative and excellent judgment. The attorney must be capable of independent clear thinking. This attorney must also have the ability to recognize significant legal and operational matters to be addressed by senior attorneys or management.
Juris Doctor degree
Thorough knowledge of all health care related laws and regulations
Excellent legal writing, research and analytical skills
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
Ability to work directly and communicate verbally and in writing with a large number of clients on multiple complex issues and transactions
Ability to promptly and efficiently review, analyze and apply large amounts of information pertaining to health care operations and transactions
Ability to succinctly describe legal issues as applied to particular operational contexts in oral and written communications with System and Regional leaders and staff, as well as other attorneys
Ability to draft and amend corporate and other organizational documents and board resolutions
Ability to adhere to deadlines and manage competing priorities in a fast-paced environment
Strong computer skills in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook
Ten or more years of health care related legal experience in a law firm or in-house counsel setting
Licenses, Registrations, or Certifications:
License to practice law in Texas or Louisiana; benefit if both.
