This high impact role, reporting directly to the CMO, is charged with supporting development of best-in-class clinical initiatives, driving better care, better outcomes, and higher value.
Design Clinical Programs at Enterprise level using Product process (approx. 80% overalp between markets)
Partners with enterprise and market operation leadership to design high impact clinical program initiatives that drive value for patients and providers, using the productization process
Among key activities, the Medical Director:
Works closely with agilon health CMO, analytics, payer teams, and markets to identify and prioritize clinical opportunities
Builds out clinical rationale for initiatives (robust, evidence-based approach: “why is this initiative better for patient care”)
Designs detailed clinical pathways, including key actions/steps for stakeholders (PCPs, specialists/network, patients, Clinical operations, payor/MSO, Enterprise)
Develops metrics and identifies key actions/execution factors
Teams with clinical and operational leadership to develop “clinical playbooks” for targeted initiatives, such as palliative care/end of life, ESRD, CHF, osteoarthritis, low value testing, tele-medicine, hospitalist programs, specialist referral optimization, etc
Ensures tight alignment of clinical pathways with operational workflows
Assists with development and implementation of quality and efficiency measures
Serves as clinical subject matter expert (SME) for specific initiatives
Partners with external internal SMEs and/or convenses specific program or specialty sub-committees
Engage deeply with local markets for identification of clinical programs and implementation (last 20% customization to market specifics)
Works closely with each market to customize/tailor approach to optimize program success, taking into consideration baseline performance, market strategy, key players, local competitors, existing programs, etc.
Participates in regular in-person and virtual sessions with markets to assess and support programming, with an emphasis on accelerating results
Serves as a physician champion for clinical “products” and for engaging physician community in priority clinical program
Support market medical directors in engaging with health plan medical directors to accelerate opportunities for improving efficiency and quality of patient care through the ability to engage directly with local providers
Physician development and network engagement
Partners with CMO and market leadership to develop educational programming to engage physicians around key clinical programs, including “grand rounds,” forums, online materials and courses
Provides clinical insight for assessment of novel tools and care models, technology, and other innovations
Licensed and board-certified MD (expertise in IM, FP, and/or geriatrics preferable)
Minimum 3 years active clinical practice with strong clinical knowledge across the continuum of care (ambulatory, ER/IP, SNF, and home)
Robust experience with and understanding of practice management/operations
Strong operational and process management skills
Previous clinical and/or operational leadership role in value-based programs.
Proven track record developing and launching clinical programs, particularly around value-based initiatives, including program design, quality measures, efficiency
Experience developing programs for high risk/high complexity patient population strongly preferred
Passionate about healthcare transformation and value-based care
Enthusiastic about partnering with independent, community-based physicians
Entrepreneurial spirit. Innate curiosity and energized by working in a collaborative environment, developing new and creative clinical programs
Exceptional team-player, able to drive change not only through innovative program design, but also through relationships and influence
