The Senior Clinical Informaticist (CI) is an expert in the use of health information technology (HIT) applied to clinical care and health care business operations; they use informatics concepts, methods, and tools to promote safe, effective, and optimal use of technologies. The Senior CI is adept in PDSA methods and change management, serving as change agents themselves. They team with informatics, IT, and operational colleagues to assess, plan, and evaluate changes to systems and identify the impact to clinical workflows.
The Senior CI uses their deep knowledge of both clinical workflows and health IT to optimize systems and workflows through user-centered design. They solve complex issues paying special attention to usability, and incorporate quality,regulatory, and other high priority organizationalinitiatives in the design.
The CI applies their broad knowledge of healthcare processes to manage and communicate data, information, knowledge, and wisdom in clinical practice and health care operations while remaining focused on the interaction of people, processes and technology for the complete and optimal delivery of information needed for efficient, high quality and safe patient care. They anticipate the need for secondary data use and their impact on system design and understand the intersection of clinical care, technology, and data.
Responsibilities/Job Description
The Senior CI works directly with end users to understand and accurately describe improvement opportunities focused on the design of health IT systems. They identify and work on integrated solutions outside of their area of primary expertise.
The CI independently completes multiple, complex work assignments in a timely manner, collaborating across departments to design and apply solutions to achieve intended results; defines and evaluates SMART goals based on intended results.
The CI anticipates the need for and creates complex business requirements and processes/workflows across multiple operational areas. They consistently demonstrate a high level of understanding of the target audiences in all communications and evaluates the appropriate customer-service oriented communication methods and messages for diverse audiences.
All Clinical Informaticists use advanced interpersonal skills and relationship management to foster inter-professional teamwork and support the use of standard concepts and terminologies to support evidence-based practice, clinical research, quality improvement, and education ( < https://www.amia.org/programs/working-groups/nursing-informatics >). The CI uses the following skills to engage end users, technical resources, and stakeholders: Assessment and consultation; Issues Identification; Outcomes Identification; Planning; Implementation; Evaluation; and Innovation. They also evaluate the social, legal, regulatory, and ethical impact of informatics solutions on healthcare workflows and processes.
Qualifications
Required
Education
Bachelors Degree in health care field from an accredited program or informatics degree from an accredited institution or combination of relevant experience and education
Experience
Five years clinical healthcare experience and/or 5 years informatics-related experience working in a health system directly with end users.
Proven experience leading committees, projects, and activities
Must understand clinical care workflows, clinical operations, and have a working knowledge of computer systems and systems life cycle
License/Certification/Registratio
Maintain current Epic certifications per vendor requirements and/or commitment to obtaining Epic certification within 6 months of employment
Preferred
Education
Masters or Doctoral level degree in nursing, informatics, or operational leadership
