As the Vice President, Chief Medical Officer (CMO) you bring strong leadership talents to inspire, guide, and engage with the St. Maryâ™s Medical Center Medical Staff to ensure that the highest quality of medical care is provided to our patients. The cornerstone of this role is the development of meaningful relationships, and ongoing dialog and communication with leaders and other members of the hospital medical staff, and working in collaboration with the Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) and their leaders to improve clinical outcomes; the ultimate result being the achievement of the âœideal patient experienceâ coupled with providing an engaging environment for all clinicians to practice medicine and provide care. As a part of a larger health system you will interact regularly with other CMOs and System Leadership to enhance the overall delivery of care.

Your Day
Working as a senior leader at St. Maryâ™s Medical Center, the CMO will strive to ensure that the organization continues on its journey toward âœsystemnessâ and meets the strategic objectives set forth by the Board and executive leadership; critical to success in this role is the ability of the incumbent to: translate strategy into action plans; form close working relationships with the clinical and operations leaders within the care site; advocate for the use of the EMR and other clinical information systems; encourage benchmarking, sharing of best practices and collaboration among all clinicians; build momentum and excitement around physician engagement.
Primary responsibilities of this position will include:
- Partner and collaborate with the medical staff and management team, facilitating teamwork and shared goals. Help represent medical staff viewpoints to administration and relay administrative views to medical staff.
- Provide on-going counsel and advice to the Chief of Staff of the Medical Staff and Chief of Staff- Elect of the Medical Staff on physician matters. The primary responsibility and authority for dealing with medical staff matters and concerns will rest with the Chief of Staff of the medical staff.
- Facilitate, intervene and mediate all major physician-physician, physician-patient, and physician-staff concerns in collaboration with the Chief of Staff of the Medical Staff and other appropriate medical staff executive team members and hospital leaders.
- Ensure that clinical practice adheres to the Ethical and Religious Directives.
- Provide leadership and expertise to ensure that medical quality improvement and utilization management programs are carried out in clinical areas through the development and implementation of effective disease management programs, clinical protocols and guidelines, other decision tools, and review of outcomes.
- Implement improvement efforts as a result of physician profiling data.
- Work closely with the Chief Nursing Officer and Vice Presidents for clinical services to achieve effective care management processes and develop new initiatives to improve clinical quality.
- Support organizational structure which promotes shared accountability, high achievement and compliance with applicable laws and regulations; this to include electronic linkages and care delivery tools.
- Lead the efforts around clinical performance with regard to outcome assessment, risk reduction, and clinical case management.
- Champion educational and mentoring initiatives that will enable care site leaders to recognize and prioritize opportunities and to implement strategies and tactics to document and reduce process variation in relation to clinical management and length of stay.
- Participate in the development and implementation of strategic plans specific to trends and changes in medical care and medical management, patient safety, and clinical quality; ensure that appropriate metrics are designed and implemented for comprehensive program(s) assessment. Monitor and ensure the achievement of desired outcomes.
Your experience
We expect excellence, which is why we require:
- MD or DO degree and board certified in a specialty or primary care field
- A minimum of ten (10) years in the practice of medicine and five (5) years in a leadership role within a complex hospital or health system setting
- Demonstrated progressive responsibility, authority, and accountability in physician leadership positions and/or possessing a graduate business /management degree are most desirable
