Vanderbilt University Medical Center (VUMC) has a long history of innovation in clinical informatics. Until 2017, VUMC developed its own clinical information systems but has now transitioned to Epic. VUMC has also seen increasing interest in clinical informatics research and operational projects throughout the university and medical center, including frequent requests for data, as well as ideas for clinical informatics interventions such as clinical decision support (CDS).
The Vanderbilt Clinical Informatics Center (VCLIC) coordinates clinical informatics activities across Vanderbilt University Medical Center. VCLIC is working to "pave the road" for clinical informatics researchers and practitioners, ensuring that faculty, students and staff through Vanderbilt find it easy to access data, test innovations and evaluate results. VCLIC also offers lectures, trainings, competitions and funding opportunities for Vanderbilt informaticians.
Through the VUMC Department of Biomedical Informatics (DBMI) and VCLIC, the individual will have numerous opportunities for training and career development, especially for those with a career interest in healthcare and/or biomedical informatics. DBMI and VCLIC hold weekly seminars and journal clubs and offer trainings on research skills and data management. Opportunities to observe and shadow healthcare providers are also available.
