The College of Health Professions at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) is in the process of developing a Master of Science in Genetic Counseling program. The College of Health Professions seeks a proven leader to serve as the Assistant Program Director. This individual will be responsible for development of didactic and clinical curriculum design and for collaborating with the Program Director through the accreditation process, program development and growth, and maintaining program compliance with accreditation standards.
This is a full-time position within the Division of Genetic Counseling. The assistant director will provide strategic and administrative leadership to the Division of Genetic Counseling in its teaching, research and clinical missions and help realize the College’s vision of improving the health of populations by developing and inspiring health scientists and leaders.The faculty member will engage in clinical practice as a part of their assigned duties. Faculty appointment and rank will be commensurate with experience.
In collaboration with the Program Director:
Provide strategic and administrative leadership to the Division of Genetic Counseling
Work with the Accreditation Council for Genetic Counseling and the American Board of Genetic Counseling to ensure educational programs meet accreditation requirements
Contribute to student instruction as course director and instructor for the Program’s courses: Genetic Counseling Principles, Health and Genetic Deviation, Professional Issues I, Advanced Genetics Topics, Journal Club and Case Conference, or other courses based on applicant’s interests and expertise
Collect and maintain all didactic course grades and evaluations (qualitative and quantitative), clinical year course grades and associated grade components, and clinical year student and preceptor evaluations
Conduct scholarship and/or research in areas of the faculty member’s academic interests
Clinical practice up to 30% of effort
Participate in other duties as assigned by the Division Director
Act as Program Director in the event that the Program Director is absent for an extended period; this interim-directorship would last until the Program Director is able to resume directorship or a permanent replacement is found.
Hold a master’s degree in the discipline of genetic counseling
Have current certification in genetic counseling by the American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC) or the American Board of Medical Genetics and Genomics (ABMGG)
Recertify with ABGC or ABMGG
Have at least three years of experience as a certified genetic counselor
Have administrative, leadership, supervision and teaching experience
Be available for program administration year-round
Demonstrate excellent analytical and critical thinking skills with close attention to detail
Demonstrate expert skills in framing analytic problems, identifying key stakeholders, acquiring and preparing data, selecting and applying analytic tools, making recommendations, and producing actionable results
Possess strong organizational and interpersonal communication skills
Possess a strong commitment to achieve the missions of the Division of Genetic Counseling, the College of Health Professions, and the Medical University of South Carolina
