University Medical Partners (UMP) formed in January 2017 to create a unified multi-specialty physician practice and clinical network that will serve as an exemplar for the delivery of high-quality health services in the Bay Area in partnership with University HealthCare Alliance (UHA). UHA is the medical foundation sponsored by Stanford Medicine to provide community healthcare now branded as Stanford Medicine Partners (SMP).
UMP Practitioners deliver care at clinics operated by SMP and Stanford Health Care (SHC) in Alameda, Santa Clara, and Contra Costa Counties.
POSITION TITLE: Vice President of Medical Group (VPMG)
REPORTS TO: CEO Medical Group
PURPOSE STATEMENT: The VPMG provides administrative leadership for the board activities, human resources, compliance/risk management, provider contracting, recruitment, and compensation, funding negotiations and reconciliations, strategic planning, and other corporate and governance functions of University Medical Partners (UMP). As a hands-on executive leader for a lean team, the VPMG is responsible for implementing approved processes, technology, and leadership development to improve UMP’s ability to create value. Working under the CEO/President and Medical Group Leadership, the VPMG is responsible for executing on SMP-MG’s vision/mission of delivering top decile quality and high value care to patients and their families.
Working within the context of Stanford Medicine’s Integrated Strategic Plan (ISP) and Stanford Medicine Partners and Stanford Health Care’s strategic priorities, the VPMG is also responsible for ensuring that SMP-MG improves patient quality, service, and value. The VPMG is also responsible for ensuring that SMP-MG maintains a fiscally sound enterprise capable of generating financial returns reflecting the opportunities and constraints resulting from the partnership with Stanford Medicine Partners.
The VPMG will report to the CEO/President of the medical group, working collaboratively across multiple organizations (SHC, SMP-F, Stanford School of Medicine, and Medical Group communities). The VPMG will maintain strong relationships with UMP Chiefs, Medical Directors, front-line physicians, and other members of the UMP management services team and foster collaboration with and accountability for performance.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The essential duties of this position include the following (other duties may be assigned):
Provide direct oversight of the key personnel and employment related activities of the medical group
Ensure the organization is meeting stated goals and objectives for all corporate functions
Dyadic leadership in design and implementation of medical group strategy and tactics
Provide leadership, guidance, and professional development to direct reports
Maintains a database of medical group’s compensation related information (at the individual clinician level)
Maintain current knowledge of physician practice management
Corporate fiduciary responsibility with UMP bank, brokers, and advisers
Develop and manage UMP’s corporate relationship with SMP and SHC
Manage administration of the Professional Services Agreement (PSA)
Develop deal points and conduct cost modelling analysis for PSA negotiations
Manage medical group funds flow reconciliations and accounting for all compensation and benefits plans; advise Physician Executive Leadership on financial projections and forecasts
Make financial planning and cost modelling/allocation recommendations to Physician Executive Team based on objective financial criteria
Manage accounting, payroll and accounts receivable/payable activities and teams, ensure sound financial policies and practices are in place, and provide complete and accurate financial statements
Provide key analytics to the medical group leadership for improved business decision-making
Principal contact with UMP outside attorneys including corporate, regulatory, and employment
Partners with SMP finance team and clinic administrators in developing/forecasting budget for the individual clinicians/aggregate for the medical group.
Conduct financial analysis that will inform key decisions by the medical group for recommendation to the Foundation (i.e. changes in funds flow, PSA funding, etc.).
Develop funding allocation methods, establish tools to implement them, and provide training to groups as needed
Develop annual medical group operating budgets, providing reporting and oversight to participating departments or groups
Identify, recommend, and implement process and program changes to improve the overall performance of areas of responsibility
Direct oversight on HR, payroll, retirement plans and other employment related programs
Ensure compliance with payment terms of the medical group Professional Service Agreements (PSA)
Manage and ensure timely renewals of corporate licenses and insurance, corporate liability, and workers’ compensation
Maintains an up-to date process document/guidebook of different corporate functions
Ensure compliance with all audit requirements, financial processes, and systems as outlined by the Medical Group(s), as well as other internal or external bodies
Performs other related duties as assigned.

Experience and qualifications:
REQUIRED:
Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in related field required
Must live in the market (not a hybrid or telecommuting role)
At least 10 years of experience leading or working with independent or employed physicians; management experience within a health care system
At least five years working in human resource management leadership
Strong working knowledge of employment laws, wage and hour, unfair labor practices, OSHA compliance, workers’ compensation, and other CA specific labor regulations
Solid experience leading change management initiatives
Strong experience developing and implementing operating plans, analyzing financial and quality data; experience in developing and/or operating management services organizations is beneficial
Ability to lead a comprehensive assessment of the physician network to create a physician recruitment and succession plan; exposure to physician performance management strategies
Knowledgeable of various physician compensation plans, incentives, and risk-based contracting arrangements
Solid business acumen and analytical skills, including an understanding of clinical data management
Strong verbal and written communication skills
