The Chief Medical Officer (CMO) is responsible for leading and inspiring the provider workforce with a focus on overall performance including quality of care, patient experience, physician and provider experience, care coordination and efficiency across UnityPoint Clinic. Establishes credibility as a strategic leader who can effectuate change and lead high performing teams with expanded responsibilities around physician and provider leadership. In collaboration with other members of the Senior Leadership team, the CMO creates a vision and strategic direction for medical care providers to support the mission, vision and values of UnityPoint Health and leads initiatives toward quality, service, growth, community and fiscal accountability. The expectation is this position will be .8 Administration and .2 Clinical.
Responsibilities
Clinical Excellence
Understand national and regional healthcare environments, major market changes and help shape the clinical vision, priorities and strategic plans for UnityPoint Clinic.
In partnership with the UnityPoint Clinic CNE, leads the overall performance of our employed providers as it relates to quality, patient experience, deployment of new care delivery models and other employment expectations. Accountable for the Clinical Quality Assurance Committee.
Advocates and represents UnityPoint Clinic and our provider workforce in leadership forums.
Provides support for legislative advocacy initiatives that support the interests of our patients and providers. Ensures compliance with all regulatory agencies and rules of accrediting bodies
Physician Leadership, Provider Development and Well-Being
Inspires frontline clinical providers and staff, actively listen to their concerns and work with leaders and other stakeholders to optimize their work environment.
Accountable for UnityPoint Clinic’s Provider Engagement & Well-being plan. Leads the Provider Engagement Team and champions DEI efforts.
Develops and mentor’s physician leaders enhancing the management and leadership team.
Accountable for UnityPoint Clinic’s provider leadership development programs, which includes talent development, succession planning, with an intentional focus on the Associate Medical Directors and Site Leads.
Creates a mutual understanding of expectations between frontline providers.
Builds credible and trusting relationships with the Board of Directors, Regional Leadership, Physicians and Employees.
Leads ongoing CME and educational opportunities for UnityPoint Clinic providers
Operational Efficiency and Effectiveness
Responsible for the performance of the Regional VP/Medical Directors.
Ensures best practices are deployed consistently throughout all regions.
Builds strong relationships with Regional CEO’s and make sure they are continually informed and understand organizational strategic initiatives and the various impacts in the regions through shared decision making.
Coordinates regional efforts and communications with the UnityPoint Clinic COO to maintain consistent messaging
Collaborates on care coordination efforts with regional CMOs, Service Line Leaders, UPaH and UP at Work to ensure a seamless deliver model for our patients, families and communities.
Creates a mutual understanding of expectations between frontline providers.
Builds credible and trusting relationships with the Board of Directors, Regional Leadership, Physicians and Employees.
Actively participates in the UnityPoint Clinic Provider Compensation Committee.
Compliance and Risk
Partners with Compliance and Risk departments to deploy risk mitigations strategies and leads the provider educational efforts.
Provides physician leadership and oversight to compliance and risk events.
Leads board of medicine investigations, reports and processes.
Leads Peer Review committee and UnityPoint Clinic lead for the enterprise malpractice program.
Partners with the enterprise revenue cycle team to monitor coding compliance, trends and documentation practices.
Accountable for UnityPoint Clinic clinical, compliance and provider policies.
Basic UPH Performance Criteria
Be aware of what is happening in clinic/department and the organization by attending clinic/department meetings, reading emails and regularly checking information on the organization’s intranet site.
Maintain regular and consistent attendance at work.
Maintain compliance with CLIA, OSHA, Safety and Risk Management guidelines.

Monitor environmental conditions in order to secure protected health information.

Practices and reflects knowledge of HIPAA, TJC, DNV, OSHA and other federal/state regulatory agencies guiding healthcare.
Completes all annual education and competency requirements within the calendar year.
Is knowledgeable of hospital and department compliance requirements for federally funded healthcare programs (e.g. Medicare and Medicaid) regarding fraud, waste and abuse. Brings any questions or concerns regarding compliance to the immediate attention of hospital administrative staff. Takes appropriate action on concerns reported by department staff related to compliance.
Qualifications
MD/DO Degree
10+ years related medical experience
At least seven years of physician administrative experience
Experience with medical group operations and IT/IS systems/platforms.
Board certification
Valid driver’s license when driving any vehicle for work-related reasons.
