General Description of the Job Class
Manage and supervise functions of assigned patient care area on a 24 hour basis; ensure effective delivery of clinical patient care and compliance with administrative and clinical policies and procedures.Nurse Manager of Operations of the Ambulatory Surgery Center in collaboration with the ACNO, AVP, and COD is responsible for the results of the center's business and operations, including, but not limited to the following:
Duties and Responsibilities of this Level
Participate in the development of the clinical areas' strategic and operational plans. In collaboration with the ACNO, AVP, and COD the NMO recommends, develops, and executes short and long-term strategic plans that help drive clinical, financial, and operational results. Partners with DUHS perioperative leadershipto design and implement various growth initiatives and operational effectiveness opportunities.
Actively support and promote a professional practice model that encourages staff participation in developing collaborative, collegial clinical standards and utilizing current trends and data in professional practice (clinical and administrative). Openly support and consistently communicate the mission of the unit/department and the organization. Serve as the collective voice for the surgery center staff to communicate with the administration. Serve as the staff and patient advocate to ensure optimal patient care.
Interface with patients and families to ensure that care is consistent with their expectations. Ensure active use of the nursing process for patients from pre-admission/admission to discharge and beyond (based on the clinical setting). Serve as a professional role model and mentor to staff by responding positively to change while supporting colleagues through the change process. Serve as a change agent to facilitate communication and transition that supports the organization's mission.
Ensure the surgery center's workforce is diverse and cognizant of the value diversity brings to the workplace.
Assure coordination/participation of the ambulatory surgery center committees. Manage, supervise and coordinate delivery of patient care for the ambulatory surgery center on a 24-hour basis. Ensure compliance with clinical patient care standards and established policies and procedures.
Maintain clinical competencies for the assigned clinical area and provides bedside care as needed. Assess/coach and evaluate staff level of practice. Develop programs that foster continued clinical development from novice to expert to impact patient care and career satisfaction of staff positively.
Maintain required AAAHC accreditation and regulatory records, reports, and statistics for administrative purposes, ensuring compliance with established DUHS policies, procedures, objectives, quality control (POCT); PI, safety, environmental, and infection control. Communicate requirements to staff, and hold staff accountable to established requirements. Coordinate develope, implement, and evaluate policies and procedures designed to improve operational efficiency. Coordinate QC/PI activities with appropriate staff.
Oversee various personnel actions including, but not limited to, hiring, performance appraisals, disciplinary actions, terminations, and other related activities.
Plan, schedule, and organize work for the team ensuring proper distribution and delegation of assignments and efficient utilization of personnel, space, and facilities; overall accountability for the requisition, care, and maintenance of unit inventory, equipment, and supplies.
Coordinate the activities of nursing staff with other hospital personnel; accountable for the effective and efficient operation of the ambulatory surgery center and staff, including orders, treatments, plans of care, and clinical pathways are being carried out in a manner supportive of patient care and recovery. Ensure patient care documentation is complete and accurate in accordance with hospital and unit surgery center's policies and procedures.
Collaborate with the Director of Clinical Operations to determine fiscal requirements of assigned unit(s), and prepare budgetary recommendations. Monitor the level of resources utilized in service delivery and determines the appropriateness of resource consumption in the service. Develop action plans in conjunction with the Director of Clinical Operations to ensure budget and resource efficiency, and satisfaction with patient care delivery.
Effectively drives and sustains a zero patient harm culture. Proactively collaborates with physicians to meet patient needs and exceed patient expectations. Effectively builds and manages a team of high-performing clinicians to deliver excellent patient care. Partners with the Medical Executive Committee and AHS Board of Managers in developing clinical guidelines and implementing the center's response to the community's changing healthcare needs.

In Collaboration with the Ambulatory Surgery leadership the ASC NMO will help drive organic top-line growth via increased volume, strategic service line growth, new physician recruitment, and increasing volume from existing physicians.
Initiates, develops, and maintains strong physician relationships to support -top-line growth, governance, board interests, and trust/confidence in Duke Health.
Proactively collaborates with Duke University Health System departments to identify and implement best practices related to clinical quality, volume growth, and operational excellence.
Safeguards the Center's assets and ensure that the Center''s building and/or tenant improvements and equipment are maintained in good working order and in compliance with local, state, and federal regulations.
Maintains center operations in compliance with regulatory requirements and accrediting body standards.
Partners with PRMO to ensure efficient business office operations. Provide support including (but not limited to): Medical Records, Credentialing, Admissions/Intake, Accounts Payable, Billing, Collections, Insurance Verification, Transaction, Posting, Clinical Logs, and other duties as needed.
Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.
Required Qualifications at this Level
Education:
Bachelor's degree in Nursing is required. Master's degree in Nursing strongly preferred.
Experience:
Three years of experience in ambulatory surgery nursing is required. Clinical Leadership experience is required. Background in ambulatory or outpatient surgery is strongly preferred; Orthopedics experience strongly preferred.
Knowledge of AAASC Standards are required
Operating room experience strongly preferred.
Operational management experience such as budgeting, financial management, clinical services management credentialing, accreditation, or similar strongly preferred.
Demonstrable leadership ability, relentless follow through, effective communication skills, both written and verbal, and proven ability to interact well with physicians and surgeons is required.
Physician relationship management required.
The ability to prioritize, function efficiently and responsibly in emergency situations required.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite is required.
Degrees, Licensure, and/or Certification:
Must have current or compact RN licensure in the state of North Carolina.
BCLS certification required.
Nurses hired into leadership positions must obtain a nursing leadership certification within one year of hire.
New nurse leaders who are ineligible to sit for an exam because they have not been working in a leadership role for the minimum amount of time required must complete their certification within three months of becoming eligible.
